Short-Term Disability

Benefit Overview

The Short-Term Disability (STD) plan through NIS provides income protection if you’re unable to work due to a covered illness, injury, or medical condition. This benefit helps replace part of your weekly income while you recover, so you can focus on getting better without worrying about lost wages.

Available to eligible Eaton RESA employees who elect coverage during enrollment. No medical questions are required if enrolling when first eligible or during open enrollment.

Key Details

Short-Term Disability pays a portion of your income when you’re temporarily unable to work due to a covered disability. You can select from two coverage options to fit your needs and budget.

How It Works

After your elimination period ends, STD benefits replace part of your lost income while you recover. You can use this money for bills, rent, groceries, or any personal expenses. If your recovery continues past the STD period, your Long-Term Disability coverage (if applicable) may take over.

Important Information

  • Medical questionnaire is not required during your first eligibility period or open enrollment.
  • Coverage may be increased by 10% without medical questions following qualifying life events such as marriage, childbirth, or job change.
  • Pre-existing condition limitations apply for the first 12 months unless you were previously covered under another plan.
  • Disabilities from mental disorders or substance abuse are limited to 24 months of benefits (per period of disability).

Who This Benefit Is For

This plan is ideal for employees who want to protect their income in case they are unable to work temporarily due to illness or injury. It’s especially useful for those who do not have enough sick leave or savings to cover extended absences.
